Why FirstEnergy Subsidiary Potomac Edison No Longer Reads Electric Meters

7/7/2012

One member of FirstEnergy's inept in house counsel team has missed his calling.  "Potomac Edison's" response to Sugarloaf Conservancy's complaint to the Maryland Public Service Commission regarding the company's failure to read electric meters over the past year would make a better Disney film than it does a logical and truthful answer to the matter at hand.

Applicable adage for FirstEnergy:

"Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part."

None of what this guy says even resembles the truth and is nothing more than a series of overly elaborate excuses that will now have to be repeated over and over again in different jurisdictions.    It's nothing more than a series of boring planning gaffes that take corporate incompetence to a new level.  No wonder so many consumers are still waiting for FirstEnergy to get their power back after more than a week.

And I do so love the whiny, aggressive tone Mr. Paparazzi takes with Sugarloaf Conservancy for having the temerity to file a complaint.

Fail.

Maybe if their paid their people more or treated them better, they wouldn't find other jobs. I think the billing department must also be out repairing lines as I haven't received my bill and it's usually here the 1st of the month. When I go on line to check for my bill, it's not there, just the previous three months. I guess I'll have to call them, I don't want them turning my lights off for non-payment of a bill I didn't receive. Heard another good comment on Channel 4 over the weekend regarding PEPCO. They want to suggest to the CEO he should take their yearly profits and put the lines underground. Wow, what a concept.

Okay, I broke down and called Potomac Edison to check on my bill. The very nice and polite lady who answered said we didn't send you a bill. I'm thinking, free electric, never gonna happen. We have been on the payment plan since we moved to WV in 1987. Apparently, since the merger, they have been having problems with this, people's bills are only to vary $10.00 or so a month, but it's been more, like $40 or $50 so they are trying to fix it. So I asked her if next month I'll get socked with a double bill. She didn't know the answer to that. She said I could pay something on my bill this month which I'm going to do because I'm not going to get socked with a huge bill next month. Now why couldn't they have posted something on their website or mailed something to the customers affected. I must admit the person I spoke with was very nice and friendly.

Pam,

I'm just speechless! That story tops the one I heard the other day. FirstEnergy's billing practices are completely outrageous! You're safer making a payment because I've heard that when customers get one of those whopping bills that are a product of FirstEnergy not reading meters, they want to charge you interest and ding your credit for non-payment if you take several months to pay.

FirstEnergy is an organizational mess. Go figure. It's a wonder the lights stay on... sometimes.

Potomic Edison is in the business of gouging it's customers. I received a bill due april 12 2013 for 831.35. I found out about it through my online checking account which I was floored. Apparently they missed a reading and due to UNDER estimating this bill covered costs that went back 6 damn months. No phone call no anything other then sorry sir but the money has allready cleared and there is nothing we can do about it. I am fed up with all the back handed undermining and borderline extortion that we as a citizen have to endure all because of greed and that all mighty dollar. I will be taking up the cause of bringing a class action lawsuit against this company as I have already spoken to many of my neighbors in regards to this Companies less then lawful and misleading ways. I am a disabled vet on a very fixed income and in the 20 plus years of living here I have never had a bill exceed the hi 300 dollar range EVER. As for Potomic Edison who is already having to explain themselves in court in the State of MD. may now ad another state to the mix, WV. and very very pissed off about this!

After about 5 months at my new address during the cold months between December and till the beginning of spring I received a bill from Potomac Edison for over $440.00. I was told over the phone that it was a correct and that every payment I have made for the last 5 months was just an estimate of me usage. I find it possible that I have used an average of $80.00 a month in electric since I leave alone, heat my heat with gas and only running what I need when I am at home. If I am not in a room the television, computer nor any other electronic devices are on or being used.

StopPATH Blog began as a forum for information and opinion about the PATH transmission project.  The PATH project was abandoned in 2012, however, this blog was not.

StopPATH Blog continues to bring you energy policy news and opinion from a consumer's point of view.  If it's sometimes snarky and oftentimes irreverent, just remember that the truth isn't pretty.  People come here because they want the truth, instead of the usual dreadful lies this industry continues to tell itself.  If you keep reading, I'll keep writing.
