The NIMBY monster is winning!

Remember the Chamber of Commerce's Project/No Project "study" that was trotted out a few months ago?

StopPATH WV blog link

The Power Line link

Here's a presentation based on the "study" that they developed and presented at the Eastern Coal Council Conference & Exposition on May 23.  It's funny because it begins by crediting "NIMBYs" with an increasing power to kill projects.  Oh no!  The NIMBYs are winning!

But there's a lot more at work here than meets the eye.  This thing is chock full of all the common propaganda techniques.  How many can you find?

This presentation gives away the impetus behind the "study" -- energy corporations are getting their clocks cleaned by an increasingly informed and motivated public when they propose costly, gratuitous projects intended only to score huge corporate profits.  Therefore, the corporations funded the "study" and credited it to the Chamber of Commerce to make it appear as if it was an independent work from a disinterested, credible source.  The Chamber of Commerce has a long history of being a willing stooge for big business, and they are well-funded by corporations for playing this third-party role.

Before we get started, let's review the seven common propaganda techniques we've discussed before.

  1. Name-calling
  2. Glittering generalities
  3. Transfer
  4. Testimonial
  5. Plain folks
  6. Card stacking
  7. Bandwagon

This presentation jumps right into name-calling, transfer and plain folks in order to create a villain -- the dreaded NIMBY!  They do a great job of building the monster.  NIMBYs are portrayed as unreasonable, animalistic, litigious, malicious manipulators intent on destroying everything in their path just for the sheer fun of it.  In fact, the NIMBY vampires actually feast on the BLOOD of corporations on page 7!  And, the NIMBYs are wildly successful!  Just for good measure, they throw in a bit of "tree-hugging."  You know, those weird greeniacs who eat fungus and don't shave their legs.  They're not like you at all!  If we listen to them we're all going to be living in caves and freezing in the dark.

But... here comes the Chamber of Commerce to save the day with their glittering generalities, testimonial, transfer, bandwagon and card stacking!  According to the CoC, we must go along with corporate money-making schemes if we want to get our economy back on track and solve unemployment, or else we're all going to be poor and unemployed and the United States will be destroyed!!  This may be one of my favorite lines in the whole thing:

"We focused on energy, but just as easily could have used cell towers, big-box stores, highways, etc. The NIMBYs don’t discriminate."

They "could have" focused on other infrastructure, but there wasn't any money in that!  The CoC focused on energy because that's who was paying for their "study" and participation as a corporate shill.  Us NIMBYs don't discriminate, but the CoC always discriminates against those who don't have a checkbook in their hand.

Pretty funny, but also a bit frightening because it is so slick.  There's a PR firm executing this, one of the big boys, and they don't come cheap.  This must have cost millions.  Unfortunately, because the funding is coming from energy corporations, it's undoubtedly being passed along to consumers in their utility bills.

Let's make this into one of those "find the missing object" puzzles.  Go brush up on the 7 common propaganda techniques, and then take a look at the presentation and identify how and where the techniques were used.  Not only is it fun, it's also great mental exercise -- the ability to quickly and expertly identify propaganda will serve you well in life.

What a horrible waste of money spent solely on propoganda! Undoubtedly paid for by you and I. The CoC and all it's members should be ashamed to claim this was an "independant" study done by them. It is obvious to ANYONE that this has been compiled by the corporate energy sector in order to influence CoC members into backing these huge insane projects. This is just one more attempt at keeping the people "in the dark" by doing business as usual and thinking(or lack there of) as usual. Any business that wants to be successful well into the future had better start thinking progressively and not rely on the same old ways of thinking. You see it every day, businesses, towns, cities and even corporations are begining to think cleaner and greener. HELL YES, I'M A TREE HUGGIN', GREENIAC! If for no other reason than I would like my child and his children to have a long and healthy future.

I always suspected that you were a closet greeniac because you don't shave your legs and like to hunt mushrooms ;-)

Keep ruining society until we're all living in caves, using fire to keep warm, and washing our clothes by beating them on a rock (although, if we revert to cavepeople, will we still need clothes?) Hmmm.... didn't that caveman sitcom fail?????? That's your fault too, you silly greeniac!

I just looked at slide three in the Chamber slide show. The middle picture is a rather famous picture from the Kennedy/Koch/Mitt Romney assault on Cape Wind and offshore wind power. This picture actually shows a mixture of demonstrators at a state public hearing including very prominently displayed signs saying "YES" under a picture of wind turbines. At least half of the people in this Chamber clown's picture are YIMBYs supporting Cape Wind.

This guy must have studied at clown college with the CRA interns.

Good catch, Bill! :-) That's funny!

Maybe they used that picture to portray NIMBYs as irrational -- can't decide whether to say yes or no, so they say both in that picture.

Someday... Ringling Brothers is going to offer a degree in public relations, I just know it!

Dang! You sure do raise the stuff that tees me off. I'm way on board with this, and you know that I think BIG. CoC should duck. On the other hand, nothing like a big fat-headed target. :)

The fun just never ends! I just got a push poll phone call for the Governor's race. They started off by asking to speak to a particular individual, and then told me they obtained my number through random dialing. Hello??? He tried to tell me that the name he asked for "just came up" when he dialed randomly. However, that's not the name the phone is listed in (nor has it ever been). Considering who he asked for, he got the name off voter registration records indicating the person he asked for was registered in the party behind the push poll. It was really pathetic, but I played along just to screw up their "results." The best question was "Tomblin used to own video lottery machines. He sold them to someone else, who was subsequently indicted." How likely would you be to vote for Tomblin now? LOL I said VERY LIKELY. Seriously, that was so completely idiotic I don't know who would fall for any of it!

The world if full of bullsh*tters! Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining!

Chamber of Commerce Flubs Tort "Reform" Propaganda Campaign

I guess the CoC must have been a Charles Ryan Client at that time....

LOL

Hey, doesn't Charles Ryan still have a secret? Once PATH gives up and files for abandonment we can have some fun revealing their remaining secret!

Something no one has commented on ... Who's the intended audience for this?

I believe it's aimed squarely at the Obama administration - you know, the one that's accused of being "hostile to business?" The one that's accused of ignoring the need for jobs?

I steer your attention to the last line on p. 8 - "how much money exactly is sitting on the sidelines due to this problem?"

"The sidelines." That's political-speak for how the banks aren't letting $$ out for investment but hoarding it instead, because of "uncertainty" (another code word used by our corporatist overlords).

Or look at the headline on p. 10: "Finding the Money and the Jobs." So they're blaming NIMBYs (!!!!) for our economy's woes?!?

(p. 14 is interesting, where it lists "Virginia projects at risk at time of study." Excuse me? How long ago was this [bleeping] study done? TrAIL is listed "at risk," but it was approved, what, almost three years ago? Has this "study" been sitting on a shelf, and they just pulled it down and dusted it off?)

While it's amusing, in a passing way, that they see us as the big bad bogeyman, this message is aimed squarely at Washington - at Congress and the administration - and is a propaganda effort to encourage those institutions to ignore citizens' voices.

You wonder why our country is so messed up at the moment? Here's a perfect example.

You're right, Patience. The CoC is a front for big business interests. They're currently beating the drum for "less regulation." "Regulation is strangling the economy" *eyes rolling*

Okay, here's an analogy: Say the big drug manufacturers were making drugs that killed thousands of people every year. Would we be asking that the FDA "back off" instead of regulating the drug manufacturers? If we allowed drug manufacturers to continue to manufacture and sell bad drugs, it would provide jobs and make drugs cheaper for everyone! If the FDA regulated the drug manufacturer to keep bad drugs from being distributed, it would kill jobs and raise the price of drugs for everyone!

So, what's the difference between drugs & the FDA and toxic air & AEP? Nothin'

Spin, AEP, spinnnnnnnnnnnn! Enjoy your egg facial!

StopPATH Blog began as a forum for information and opinion about the PATH transmission project.  The PATH project was abandoned in 2012, however, this blog was not.

StopPATH Blog continues to bring you energy policy news and opinion from a consumer's point of view.  If it's sometimes snarky and oftentimes irreverent, just remember that the truth isn't pretty.  People come here because they want the truth, instead of the usual dreadful lies this industry continues to tell itself.  If you keep reading, I'll keep writing.
