The big, hairy, ugly spider that is PATH

3/2/2011

I've had a bad feeling since about 30 minutes after hearing the big news on Monday.  Last week I referred to it as finding a dead mouse in your box of Cracker Jacks.  Now I feel like I just swatted a big, hairy, ugly spider with a rolled up newspaper, but it managed to scurry off to a crack in the baseboard after leaving a putrid smear and several legs behind on the wall.  That spider is the PATH project.  Buy RAID.

A very astute StopPATH board member just sent me a link to the following article which was recently updated to add the following statement from our lil' coal fella:

"FirstEnergy spokesman Doug Colafella said it looks like completion of the project has been delayed until at least 2020, based on PJM's latest forecasts."

Oh well, I hope everyone has enjoyed the past two days.  I enjoyed my 30 minutes.  Back to work.

I'm going to remain optimistic here, he says at least 2020, that could mean later. Unfortunately, we all know it will always be lurking out there in the shadows and we do have to remain vigilant. Besides, if this guy wouldn't have anything to say, he'd be out of a job as all those spokespersons would be. I believe they have cue card writers, or maybe they are all puppets operated by ventriloquists.

They only lurk if we allow them to lurk.

2020/2016 is a good ways off. We are all aware they will continue trying to play this stooooopid game unless we squash them NOW! I hope by 2016 America has wised up even more to the need for cleaner and greener, however, we will continually be watching that lil Coal Feller and all his cronies until we get them to go away for good. My personal goal is to be COMPLETELY off the grid by that point and hopefully I will be making money by selling back to them. Now don't be fooled, I will never go away and quit fighting this stoooopid BULL$#!+ but I won't be paying a bill to them either. We got em on the ropes and NOW is the time to deliver the "finishin move." PATH may be dead but if I was a bettin man, and who doesn't like a SURE bet, They already have some silly lil scheme up there sleeve. Now is the time to beat them at the Federal level and put the shenanigans away for good. As you can see (PATH) we have eyes and ears on your every move. Time for you to stop all the games and attempt to be an honest and fair business. You all (PATH) know as well as we do you will never win this, the demand for dirty coal fired power is going away, and the world is changing. Big Daddy PJM is already tired of wiping YOUR egg from its face and First Energy doesn't want the same kind of exposure you have brought upon yourselves. PATH ... JUST GO AWAY AND QUIT WAISTING MY MONEY!

The lil fella said "at least". That is no different than PJM's announcement that the need for PATH was pushed off for many years.

Think back to Loehr's testimony in VA in fall 2009. PJM only actually does real calculations out the first 3 years of its 15 year planning horizon. Then it "extrapolates" from those calculations for the remaining 12 years, mostly using straight regressions. As Loehr points out, this isn't planning, this is just math. So "at least" 2020 is way out at the far end of PJM's regression equations which have no basis in reality. That's far enough away for me.

Anyone want to make any bets with me what the grid situation will look like in 9 years? What did it look like in 2002? Compare that to now. 2020 is far enough way for me.

PJM may not even be here in 2020, the way things are going.

Speaking of FirstEnergy... did you see that ridicuwaste ad they had in the Journal today? They.... ooops, I mean WE paid for a full page ad that was mostly blank. You know, I could have just done with them actually telling the truth on their website about which shell company we're going to be writing the checks to (Potomac Edison, like I thought) and dispensed with finding it in my newspaper in a big ol' wasteful way. Hello... my name is Nighmare :-)
Stupid.

And here's the very sad news for those opposing the Kemptown substation. All of PJM's 'alternatives' to PATH have their eyes set on the Browning farm. the "Liberty" proposal connecting the farm to Three Mile Island; the "Peach Bottom" proposal connecting Kemptown to another expanding nuclear plant. These will be brought to you by PG&E or Constellation or PENELEC or anyone BUT the tainted names involved in the current project...these are all names in your future. There is another possible end. Your legislators fess up, get off the fence, and determine that there is a legislative solution to your neighborhood plight. Now is the time to push them hard and test their truth-telling mettle. Each one should be held accountable for past statements and future intentions. BTW, PJM's maps and planning lists all show 'Kemptown' as a 500kV substation now. So you heard it here first. The plan is to pretend that a 500kV is less egregious than an 765 kV. This will not end until the Browning farm is dedicated to another use. My personal favorite solution is taking PJM down since they sold this 'Kemptown' idea at least ten years ago and have held onto it like a pitbull ever since. No one really needs PJM anyway. But I'm just throwing this one out so y'all know what's coming. This time you'll be ready, right?

This is dejavue (sp???) When we first moved here in 1987, we made our checks to Potomac Edison. The power company and the cable company are now tied with name changes. Maybe I'll just starting making the checks out to me, that way I know where they are going.

How about we make the checks out to each other, Pam?

I think I'm going to make mine out to FirstEnergy and see what happens :-) And don't think I haven't had to restrain myself from creative versions of payee on my Allegheny bills over the last 3 years. Nobody looks at that stuff anyhow. You could make it payable to Fred Flintstone and the bank would still process it.

I actually had a situation present itself once where a company received a $50K check in error that was folded inside their $15 check (stupid part-time girl who did that didn't last long afterwards). The company deposited them both and hoped I wouldn't notice... and then wanted to issue me a credit memo for $50K instead of giving the money back. LOL It would have taken 20 years to buy $50K of their their crappy little parts. Banks simply don't notice or care when a business deposits checks. We could have a lot of fun with "Hello... My name is Potomac Edison".

Keryn Newman blogs here at StopPATH WV about energy issues, transmission policy, misguided regulation, our greedy energy companies and their corporate spin.
In 2008, AEP & Allegheny Energy's PATH joint venture used their transmission line routing etch-a-sketch to draw a 765kV line across the street from her house. Oooops! And the rest is history.

    StopPATH Blog

StopPATH Blog began as a forum for information and opinion about the PATH transmission project.  The PATH project was abandoned in 2012, however, this blog was not.

StopPATH Blog continues to bring you energy policy news and opinion from a consumer's point of view.  If it's sometimes snarky and oftentimes irreverent, just remember that the truth isn't pretty.  People come here because they want the truth, instead of the usual dreadful lies this industry continues to tell itself.  If you keep reading, I'll keep writing.
