PJM Wastes Consumer Funding on Frivolous Lawsuit

6/20/2013

PJM Interconnection is behaving like a big, fat, whiny baby, and wasting your money on their big, loud, head-banging, breath-holding tantrum.

PJM describes itself as "..a regional transmission organization (RTO) that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia."  PJM is funded by Y-O-U through fees added to your electric bill.

PJM pretends that it is serving your electrical needs through transparent, independent management of transmission planning and operation.

But when someone decided to publish a website with news about PJM's activities and gave it the apt name "PJM Insider," PJM's lawyers wasted a whole bunch of your money harassing the publication over copyright infringement and a whole bunch of other nonsense.  PJM contends that PJM Insider is "...confusing you into thinking we’re connected with PJM. PJM also accuses us of “unfair competition.”

Cue the frivolity!  Anyone who has spent more than 10 minutes at a PJM meeting or tried to pry information out of this cliquish cartel would never be so silly as to confuse a publication attempting to share information with PJM's actual behind-closed-doors secret scheming.

Wahhhhhhhhhhhh, PJM, Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Reminds me of this: http://www.salon.com/2013/06/20/how_to_get_sued_by_the_u_s_chamber_of_commerce_partner/singleton/

I think Heidorn gave up too easily. Just think how much fun he could have had in discovery with PJM!

How about PJM Is Full of Jerks?

No one should be confused about that one. They won't think it is an official PJM blog with that name.

PJM Is Full of Jerks AND Bullies? The melodious PIFOJAB! I like the sound of that.

Of course, PIFOJAB is pretty useless at exposing PJM chicanery when it's behind a paywall. One of our readers wanted my opinion on an article he found there after linking through. Sorry, I used all 6 of my "free" articles yesterday making this blog post. So, while speculating on future names is fun... the publication is pretty much useless to consumers (aka PJM's wallet). Nothing to see here, folks. Move along...

A six view paywall isn't much of a problem when I use satellite internet, smartphone and tablet. Just keep mixing it up. Works well with a couple of newspapers I occasionally read.

Speaking of frivolous lawsuits, have you seen what NextEra Energy (wind company) is doing to a woman who opposes the wind company?

Apparently the company doesn't like being called NextTorror or NextError. NextEra also doesn't like opposition websites;

www. ontariowindresistance.org
www.mlwindaction.org

Perhaps big energy suing individuals is the new big thing. I guess I can expect a letter from a lawyer for calling a company "Clean" Line Energy.

I don't think I called anybody SmellySkelly online. So I'm safe there, but I might have used a surrogate name on facebook once...or twice. Ah boy, I better get legal representation.

I think the publication should be renamed Billionaires For Green KoolAid.

'PIFOJAB' (as you named it) is just another industry rag trying to profit from PJM's actions. Your content is much more honest and interesting and best of all it's free

But we're not spending time and money attending PJM meetings, Alex. Just us lowly consumers trying to have a voice. Many consumers don't even know PJM exists until they read about it here, or have one of its transmission projects dropped in their back yard. And that's the way the PJM cartel likes it. "Transparently" sucking money out of your wallet every month while you don't even know they exist, and even when you do, they make sure you never really understand their purpose or actions. It's just a big secret club where consumers will never belong.

As much as I like PIFOJAB, I have to say that I'll be sad to see PJM Insider go. But I don't think any of you have $60k lying to fight their asinine lawsuit any more than we do. (Though stay tuned for our coverage of this.) Truth is - there's room for all kind of advocates in the electric wholesale industry. We're the kind that are working to change this industry from the inside: by informing and engaging the membership of PJM. We're just like the membership; another small business, a media company, albeit, in a deregulated climate, capitalizing on their need for highly specific information, overwhelmed by the volume of information that makes it difficult to challenge the "status quo." We also want the consumers within the PJM footprint to be engaged and informed - so keep it coming. You all rock! (And you'll be pleased to know that when we did our marketing research, you were equal to "Inside Lines" in our competitive analysis.)

And, BTW, my pay wall is essential for my business. I'm a mom with children trying to pay rent and live here. As one who appreciates fellow advocates, please just send me an e-mail if there's something you want to see. Don't try to cheat me. And don't tell others how to. We're in this together. C'mon.

Merry,

I'm not advocating that anyone try to cheat your paywall. Personally, I don't have time for that kind of stuff, so I probably just won't read PIFOJAB or whatever new name you settle on. It's not a matter of making a decision not to pay -- for true grassroots citizens' groups it's that we can't pay, therefore, we can't read. This may sound funny, but it's actually a compliment that someone would want to read your stuff that determinedly. The crap that PJM disseminates is useless fluff or hopelessly technical. PIFOJAB was a breath of fresh air, while we were able to read it, and some of us found it incredibly useful. No actual grassroots groups have time nor expertise to keep up with everything that PJM does (and personally I find it the most incredibly boring facet of all this -- I'd rather analyze 10 annual update formula rate filings or gouge out my eyes with chopsticks than spend one day at PJM).

We can't let you know what we want to see if we can't see it, but we sure would appreciate any little tidbits you think are relevant to share with consumers from time to time.

I wish you luck with your publication.

    StopPATH Blog

StopPATH Blog began as a forum for information and opinion about the PATH transmission project.  The PATH project was abandoned in 2012, however, this blog was not.

StopPATH Blog continues to bring you energy policy news and opinion from a consumer's point of view.  If it's sometimes snarky and oftentimes irreverent, just remember that the truth isn't pretty.  People come here because they want the truth, instead of the usual dreadful lies this industry continues to tell itself.  If you keep reading, I'll keep writing.
