Grain Belt Express Clean Line Bullies Opposition

8/19/2013

Building transmission is a dirty business.  Grain Belt Express "Clean" Line has become a leader in dirty practices by physically manhandling its opposition and dragging them out of public meetings.

Grain Belt Express claims it is "committed to engaging with local communities throughout the project area. We believe that our outreach process must be methodical, responsible and transparent. We will continue to engage interested parties and seek feedback throughout the routing process."

Except when the local communities actually produce feedback... then it's time for armed guards, physical violence and verbal abuse.  That's what happened when Amy attended a Grain Belt Express Open House in her community recently.
I looked up some European studies and copied them off in order to take them with me to the Grain Belt Express Open House the evening of July 17, 2013 in Cameron, Missouri, at the Cameron Community Center.

When my husband and I entered the meeting it was immediately apparent that this was NOT an "open" house. My training as an ad designer had taught me a few lessons in different styles of propaganda and Grain Belt Express was clearly exercising the manipulation tactic called "The Delphi Technique." I had spent the night before with little sleep because of my concern over these lines and seeing this farce being perpetrated on my fellow townspeople didn't put me in a very good mood. I only wanted to know where I could protest. Since these slick Grain Belt con artists are trained to detect dissonance, my husband and I were immediately pulled aside to have our feathers unruffled.

I handed one of my sheets of articles about the health and safety hazards of HVDC power lines to our "helper" and with only a cursory glance at my papers, he immediately began to start telling us the wonders of this line and that there are no risks, blah, blah, blah...  Understanding that I would get NOWHERE with this talking mannequin, I left his little group in his mid-sentence and began handing out my printed literature to the other small groups in the room, and asking them to ask their facilitators about the information within the studies.

When I got to the back of the room, an armed man, wearing Grain Belt clothes, identified himself to my husband as a Cameron police officer. He grabbed my arm HARD and asked me what I was doing. I told him that he was holding me too hard and that he was hurting me. He released his grip slightly and asked me again what I was doing, to which I responded that I was sharing information with others about HVDC lines and their health effects. He told me that I was to stop doing that, to which I told him that I would not and that I was exercising my right to free speech. He then explained to me that that was not allowed here and I needed to leave immediately. When I argued with him he began dragging me out of the meeting. As he was doing this I shouted, "My free speech rights are being violated and if you want to know about the hazards of HVDC towers then READ THIS!" and I threw the papers across the room and onto the floor. (You should have seen the people scramble to read them.)

When this Grain Belt rent-a-cop got me outside he began verbally abusing me and telling me that I had NO FREE SPEECH RIGHTS HERE, and that if I did not leave by the time he counted to 5, then he would take me to the station for disorderly conduct. I left on his count of 4, but several people in the group came out of the meeting to argue with the cop. Free speech is supposed to be protected by our Constitution, according to folks here in the Midwest. Besides, I thought this was an informational meeting between landowners and Grain Belt Express. Not a Grain Belt infomercial.
Is this the kind of company that should be welcomed to local communities?  One that physically and verbally abuses local citizens that resist its propaganda tactics and eminent domain taking of their private property?

Is this really about "clean" energy, or is it about financial profit?  Only money could cause a company to stoop to this kind of bullying of a community that refuses to cheerfully accept its own demise.

Clean Line is spinning out of control in its desperation to regain control over a project that's not going as planned.  These arrogant Clean Line fools actually thought they were so much smarter than "a bunch of farmers" that community acceptance would be a snap.  Reality has been a cruel master and now the company is resorting to physical violence and threats of jail to get its way.  Give up, Clean Line, you've already lost.

Check back soon to read more of Amy's story (or as she's more commonly known in "Clean" circles by her mark of the beast, "Number 95735.")

This sounds really verifiable...as a made up story. The person telling the story clearly had an agenda. I suppose everyone believes what they want.

I agree, "Seriously," you will believe what you want. And you want to deny this story because you're a Clean Line plant. I know it and you know it, so let's stop pretending. You "have an agenda," which is to take Amy's property, through eminent domain if necessary, and make a whole bunch of money doing it. Face it, "Clean" lines just aren't going to happen. You miscalculated on your reception from the public. Your projects are over time and over budget and every dime you spend now is just throwing your millionaire backers' money down a rat hole. Why don't you go get a real job and quit playing this stupid game where you're reduced to creeping around the internet via anonymous proxies in the middle of the night and telling yourself and anyone who will still listen to you that you're a climate change hero. You're a greedy, corporate creature riding the green wave for personal profit.

Is that you Adhar? I'm glad you finally agreed that your name is ridiculous and needed changing. Although, do you think "Seriously" was a good choice? How is that working out so far?

Wow. "Clean" Line is finding out that they've done a lot more than "tick off a bunch of farmers" or "poked a bear." RICL is getting really desperate to win "public perception"..... because on every other level they have grossly failed.

LOL. "Seriously" was probably at the meeting where Amy was thrown out.

Sounds more like our buddy Hans, cheif kool-aid distributor. However, he's usually more adept at making total b.s. sound at least sort of credible to anyone without a reason to question the slick sales pitch.

I am Amy, and Grain Belt's rent-a-cop did forcibly escort me out of that "open" house meeting. I made a full complaint to the Cameron,MO police department. Assaulting attendees who want information about the health and safety hazards of giant, power lines proposed to go up 300 feet from THEIR front door is bad business in the Cameron police department books. The meeting in Hamilton, MO that morning caused some farmers to be so upset by how these towers and lines would affect their land that Grain Belt drones made them leave, too. Don't trust a company who is unwilling to have open dialogue regarding peer-reviewed European studies on the dangers of EMF radiation...and we haven't even began to discuss this fact that Grain Belt so carefully covers up; the fact that wind energy can not operate without COAL fired plants supporting it. So how clean are you Grain Belt Express?

Amy,
Your "fact" that wind energy cannot operate without coal fired plants supporting it is wrong. When wind power reaches a critical mass on an RTO, as it has on PJM Interconnection and MISO, it significantly displaces coal generation. The situation has gotten so bad for coal fired generators that RTOs are curtailing generation from wind farms when they are generating maximum power to keep fossil fuel plants running. http://calhounpowerline.com/2013/08/15/nyt-supports-supression-of-renewable-power/

I agree wholeheartedly that there is no need for new transmission lines for exporting wind from the Midwest to the East Coast, but we need to get our facts straight. Here in WV, the old claim about coal fired spinning reserve and base load capacity has been used by the coal industry to attack renewable power.

Those of us who are fighting transmission lines don't need to be magnifying and spreading coal industry propaganda, especially when it has clearly been proven wrong.

The is certifiably a credible experience. Don't believe it? Then you are pushing your own agenda.

Thank you for enlightening me bh. Since I am not an energy expert, only a "proposed" future victim of this monstrous Grain Belt money and land grab, please pardon me.

What this article you shared says to me is that the east coast already has their own wind power in place and is doing just fine without Grain Belt, or any of the other lines that "Clean" Line Energy Partners has proposed. Energy really is more useable and effective on SHORT lines, instead of these ridiculously long, hundreds of miles lines of which "Clean" Line seems to be so keen. The longer the line, the more inefficient, the more they can charge? So the scheme is that Grain Belt wants to make a buck off of the east coast end-users by stepping on backs of farmers and landowners here in the Midwest? As one of those Midwest farmers and landowners I feel so comforted by this knowledge.

Why not give everybody their own personal solar panel and small windmill so they can reduce there own energy bills and needs. Who needs that expensive, dirty middle-man who is erroneously called "Clean" Line.
