AEP Wins the Ohio "Billions" Bailout Battle

5/3/2012

After FirstEnergy recently claimed that AEP "wants a billion dollar bailout" in their just plain ol' annoying amateur-hour commercials, AEP has upped the ante by claiming that FirstEnergy "wants a 7 billion dollar bailout."  What's next?  Will FirstEnergy claim that AEP wants a 14 billion dollar bailout and raise the bet in this silly game?

Who cares?  AEP gets bonus points for introducing the dreaded school lunch ladies to the fray (with a snapping glove for an extra shot of horror), and coming up with a better version of FirstEnergy's brain-dead message and using it to confuse people.  AEP = creative win!

Oh, but wait... FirstEnergy fires back with a placed editorial in their local paper whining about AEP's kickin' commercials.  Yes, we get it, AEP is now using your message against you, FE.  Wahhhh!!!  C'mon FE, you buncha wimps, we want to see some creative commercials.... get busy!

Update:  It appears FirstEnergy finally took a lesson!  See their newest commercial here.

Which lunch lady is which First Energy person? The one with the smeared lipstick must be Todd and I'm guessing the one with the glove is our friend Randy. I wish AEP would put names on them. Funny commercial!

You know, Keryn, all of these ads clearly demonstrate the contempt the power companies have for their customers. You would think that if they knew they were right, and had the facts on their side, they would simply present the facts.

Instead, all they present is BS and ridiculous claims with no real facts at all. AEP puts on stupid images of lunch ladies and lemonade stands, and FE responds with bargain basement generic ads with lousy actors. And the OH rate payers will pay for this crap.

I'll put any random paragraph on TPL up against all of these TV spots. I will guarantee you will find more facts in any random TPL graf than you will find in the all the ads.

Uh uh uh... no charging of this advertising to ratepayers! It is clearly not the type of advertising that provides benefit to ratepayers. I do hope PUCO keeps them honest in that regard. In case the companies are "confused" whether this advertising should be properly recorded ATL or BTL they should refer to the most recently filed formal challenge.

These companies demonstrate in these ads that they are completely divorced from the reality their customers live with every day. They don't stick with facts and explain things because they are incapable of doing so. The public doesn't care about the intricacies of regulation/deregulation/ratemaking, they just know they are being ripped off by both companies. The companies are so busy fighting each other now that they're not paying a bit of attention to their intended audience. Unless their intended audience is each other? They both fail to relate to the consumers and present a coherent message. But it is entertaining watching them piss away stockholder dividends!

Victory goes to the company who uses this song in one of their commercials first. (click my name)

My mother was a lunch lady, in fact, the manager of an elementary school cafeteria for several years. She didn't look like these ladies, she loved her job, the kids loved her, I take offense at this ad. They sure know how to rile people up.

Keryn Newman blogs here at StopPATH WV about energy issues, transmission policy, misguided regulation, our greedy energy companies and their corporate spin.
In 2008, AEP & Allegheny Energy's PATH joint venture used their transmission line routing etch-a-sketch to draw a 765kV line across the street from her house. Oooops! And the rest is history.

    StopPATH Blog

StopPATH Blog began as a forum for information and opinion about the PATH transmission project.  The PATH project was abandoned in 2012, however, this blog was not.

StopPATH Blog continues to bring you energy policy news and opinion from a consumer's point of view.  If it's sometimes snarky and oftentimes irreverent, just remember that the truth isn't pretty.  People come here because they want the truth, instead of the usual dreadful lies this industry continues to tell itself.  If you keep reading, I'll keep writing.
