A Walk Down Memory Lane...

9/18/2012

Last night, the StopPATHWV, Inc. Executive Committee met to celebrate their victory (again... never pass up an opportunity to celebrate your victories!) and make some decisions about the future of the corporation (more on that soon).

In addition to a delicious Italian dinner, Steve thawed out and served "the top of our wedding cake."  It may have looked a little tired around the edges (like we all do!), but it tasted just as fresh as the day it was originally served during our PATH funeral in May of 2011.  This "mini-cake" was cut from one of the big cakes at the party and tucked away in a freezer waiting for just this moment.  It was delicious!
To illustrate the more than FOUR (4) years of hard work and dedication StopPATH WV, Inc. members have invested in exposing the truth about the lack of need for this project, take a look at four years of change on our best "little buddy" Sam Smith (who now towers over everyone on the committee except his own father).  Sam was 8-years old when some power company geeks used their transmission line routing etch-a-sketch to draw a route for their PATH project right across the street from his house.  Here's Sam 2 1/2 years ago.  Here's Sam last night, now a happy, healthy 12-year old, consuming all that's left of PATH:

Sam has been an important part of our group during some of his most formative years.  He assisted us at many, many fundraisers and public events (for example hawking silly band filled balloons to other kids at the fair in exchange for donations to StopPATH WV) and sat through a plethora of boring meetings, and along the way Sam learned more about the PATH project than many adults!  And he always served as a reminder to us of what was at stake and why we persisted in stopping PATH.  We hope that we will be able to effect enough positive change to what passes for energy policy in this country in our lifetimes so that Sam will never be presented with a situation like PATH when he's an adult.  However, if he is, Sam will know exactly what to do.  Thanks for all your help and inspiration, Sam!

Along with just a few other toasts of the liquid variety, we also toasted the dead PATH project with its own funeral cake!
Yeah, yeah, we just like making toasts!  We also took a collective walk down memory lane, reminiscing over our favorite moments during the PATH fight and having a good laugh (of course, it was at your expense again, dear, dear PATH!) and the Committee requested that I ask the rest of you to post your favorite moment from the PATH fight here in the comments for this post.

We did it, everyone!

And, before we close... a picture is worth 1,000 words!  What were you thinking, PATH?!?

There are so many "favorite" moments, it's hard to pick one!

Was it the PSC hearing in Shepherdstown early on, when I walked past the Allegheny guys and just said, "You're going to lose," in a stage whisper - and got glared at?

Was it the midnight drive to Charleston with Keryn, when at 6 p.m. the committee scheduled a hearing on Manchin's beloved transmission tax for 9 a.m. the next day? (We made it, along with a fair number of other folks from all over the state.)

Was it the day Allegheny thought it had a private press briefing arranged - only for the reporters to be greeted by dozens of protesters?

Ahhh ... so many fond memories to choose from!

But the sweetest one of all was the day that PJM confirmed, once and for all, that PATH is DEAD, DEAD, DEAD!

Forgot this one last night... but remember when Sam asked one of the stuffed shirts at the Frederick dog & pony show if PATH was going to give him cancer? Next thing ya know, Sam and his father were kicked out of the "open house" meeting.

PATH... always thinking, weren't you?

Protesting along 340, speaking at Loudoun Cty HS on behalf of our VA friends, the celebration party last May, finding out the day after a Bon Jovi concert that PATH was going to be withdrawn, I could also go on and on. But the best thing was all the friends I made during this adventure, and we will be life long friends now. The old saying is nice guys finish last, not in this instance. Sorry, PATH, you lost big time. And I would think twice before you try to come back into our territory again.

Loudoun H.S.! Was that the public hearing that you came to right from VBS and had the stoppath logo painted on your cheek? You were an amazing speaker! As I recall, that was also the day we finally let PATH's "security" spies know that they were outed. Pretending to be two "citizens" sitting on a bench outside the high school, ostensibly just passing the time when they were really in place to eavesdrop on the actual citizens and report back to their PATH masters. When we moved our little group just around the corner... waited a few minutes, then peeked around the corner and found them both to have dropped their innocent bystander pretenses and were actively craning their necks to try to see/hear around the corner without leaving the bench? Ha ha ha!!!

And what was up with those "security" spy guys anyhow? Why was escorting one of their astroturf front group paid speakers to her car after a public hearing (where the dingbat talked about TrAIL!) just not enough "security?" It wasn't enough "security" until the head spy also walked over to the woman's car (which she had already been safely escorted to by the other spy guy) and had some sort of exchange with her behind the car door. Then, magically, it was "secure" enough for her to get into her car and leave. How much do you figure he paid her for her testimony?

Yeah, all PATH's inarticulate skulduggery was a constant source of amusement. They really thought they were getting away with it. Ha ha ha ha ha!!!

If Ionly had a tenth of the amountof our money PATH wasted on 'security' I would use it to throw one hell of a partry this weekend. PATH was always so certaiin that their employees and paid citizen actors were going to get their asses kicked in a public place during a public event that they felt a 'need' to waste our money on 'security'. It was only PATH's guilt talking. No real citizen ever even came close to giving those guys and gals the ass kickin they probably deserved. We were more intelligent and civilized than they gave us credit for. Take Away: If you need to hire security to escort your employees iin public places, your doing something wrong.

I really enjoyed the "open" meeting at the school in Maryland where PATH was putting on another "dog and phony pony" show (good analogy since they were so full of it) and Keryn took pictures of the PATH goons, who threatened to throw us out of the meeting if she didn't put away her camera phone. At which point she took another picture and was escorted out of the exhibit room. To our cheers! Way to GO, Keryn. It showed everyone how shamefully and unprofessionally the PATH reps conducted themselves on a regular basis.

Yes, that hearing was when I had my face painted. And another great memory and because I'm having a senior and grandma moment right now and can't remember that company's name, but the one I called on the carpet who was going to give us all kinds of money for our property because they were so sure PATH would go through.

Ardent 360 or Ten Stone LLC or Ardent Ventures or whatever business name had not yet worn out its welcome in Virginia... LOL Pretty funny! PATH sat there on its hands and watched those parasitic vultures swooping into land deals to take an unearned cut of property owners' FMV and did.... NOTHING! But Ardent dared to tick off one mountain woman.... and it's game over! Nice job, Pam!

Hey, look, now they're "building" closets, decks and installing insulation. http://www.ardenthomes.com/Ardentcompanies.html Why don't you send them a letter for their "testimonials" page, Pam? ;-)

Lets see the Frederick MD, PATH open house Mom telling the guy with the map and his finger on our property "OVER MY DEAD BODY!"
Meeting the MD opposition (Doug & Peggy) on the way out the door then the next day getting info from them making our own flyers and raising the alarm in VA...
Crashing PATH's breifing at the Loudoun County BOS .... Meeting up with the West VA opposition (Keryn & Patience) out in Shephard's town ...
CAKES showing the VA Commissioners a zoomed out picture of the the "isolated farm" at the public input sessions... watching the PATH guys noticing there were West VA folks there as well ...
Protesting on Rt 340 ...
At the SCC Hearing(s) watching the Allegheny Lawyer next to Randy getting redder & redder as each of us read our statement ...and the folks on the telecon had their say ...
The first time PATH withdrew their application from VA ...
The second time PATH withdrew their application from VA ...
All the neighbors & friends in all 3 states who stood up and said No ... and got involved.

Reading Therese's comment made me remember the night I made the land agent squirm at our dining room table. From the moment he walked in the door, I told him he was in hostile territory. Really?, he said, he hadn't noticed our Stop PATH signs in the front yard. Every time he would try to talk, I would interrupt him, he never did have a chance to show us what he was going to offer as I politely escorted him out my door.

I hear that Robin was a little less... umm, polite? to the land agents who visited her at her home in town. She may have stopped just short of beating them with her broom ;-) That's okay, the amount of money those guys were paid more than made up for what anyone put them through. For what CLS charged PATH, they should have been walking through flames to talk to you, Pam.

Theresa -- we couldn't see how red the attorneys were getting during the St. Paddy's Day hearing, but we could tell they were definitely squirming when your mom got up and scolded them. Don't mess with Irene... she'll tell you exactly what she thinks of you!!

I still remember the first day we came over to meet you all - in addition to a delicious lunch, your mom was baking an apple pie that smelled like heaven!!!

Keryn Newman blogs here at StopPATH WV about energy issues, transmission policy, misguided regulation, our greedy energy companies and their corporate spin.
In 2008, AEP & Allegheny Energy's PATH joint venture used their transmission line routing etch-a-sketch to draw a 765kV line across the street from her house. Oooops! And the rest is history.

StopPATH Blog began as a forum for information and opinion about the PATH transmission project.  The PATH project was abandoned in 2012, however, this blog was not.

StopPATH Blog continues to bring you energy policy news and opinion from a consumer's point of view.  If it's sometimes snarky and oftentimes irreverent, just remember that the truth isn't pretty.  People come here because they want the truth, instead of the usual dreadful lies this industry continues to tell itself.  If you keep reading, I'll keep writing.
