PSC Staff Petiton Makes Power Companies Say "Ouch!"

7/2/2011

I came across an article in the Charleston Gazette this morning and got a great big laugh out of it!  It's not that the subject is funny, it's the reactions of AEP and FirstEnergy to the petition as shown by the statements of their PR guys.

AEP spokesman Pat Hemlepp said Friday the utility is reviewing the petition. FirstEnergy spokesman Todd Meyers said "We will review the petition and respond appropriately."

Hmm... where have I seen those exact comments before?  I know!  It was in the power companies' press responses to the Formal Challenge Ali Haverty and I filed in January.  We filed it on a day when they weren't expecting it, and it was much worse for them than they had ever imagined.

Here's one of the many examples from Todd:

The formal complaint asks FERC to begin a broader investigation. Todd Meyers, spokesman for Allegheny Energy, said Tuesday by e-mail that the company would review the filing and respond appropriately.

Funny how the exact same words get used, isn't it?  Todd must have them printed out and taped up inside the footwell of his desk so that they're handy when he crawls under there to primal scream and sob uncontrollably about a PR "crisis" created when someone surprises FirstEnergy with a hard punch to the gut.

Here's a translation of "we will review the insert legal term for what they got clobbered with out of the blue and respond appropriately.":

"OUCH!  That really hurt!  We didn't expect that and we have no idea how we're going to try to spin it yet!"

Surpriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiise, Todd!  Hahahahahahaaaa.

Except that they won't "respond appropriately." We'll get some whiny crap from Melick and Callas how burdensome it is do prepare this report. Melick will go on and on about how there is no big rush and they can keep to the one year deadline the PSC set in the TrAIL order.

Of course, this will be from the same dude who was telling us just six months ago that the transmission system would collapse without PATH.

I think they all have the same set of flash cards and pull em out when they get a kick to the guts. 52 cards with buzzwords and phrases all written in big bold type so they can be seen in the darkest recesses of their own personal crying rooms.

I agree with bh, any day now we will all hear of how "vexatious" and "burensome" this is to them and that they just don't have time to do this because they are so focused on "keeping the lights on." Ooops, that catch phrase belongs to the coal guys. Not much different when you talking bout slimey critters.

As for the system collapsing without PATH ... Is there a single person that believes that line of C.R.A.P. (maybe Pinky's buyin it but nobody else is, I'm sure.

I'll say it one more time for the eddification of the "school girl" ... put up or shut up! Put the facts out there and let this most pious of projects stand on its own merit! If on the other hand it has no merit (which we ALL know to be true) Then, GO AWAY PATH AND QUIT WAISTING MY MONEY!

But of course Phil the Psychic will whine on cue! However, since he seems to know what everyone else is thinking all the time... WHY DIDN'T YOU SEE THIS COMING, PHIL, WHYYYYYYY? Some attorney you are! Or... perhaps he did and he kept it a SECRET so that he could wrack up a bunch more billable hours at the power companies' expense. PHIL MELICK HAS A SECRET! :-) I'd better not find Melick's billable hours for this project in PATH's revenue requirement next year.... it has nothing to do with PATH (not like that's ever stopped them from making us pay for stuff.)

And Hill.... didn't you get the memo? Our latest flashcard buzz-phrase for PATH is:

When are you people going to give up?

And smile when you say it!

Keryn Newman blogs here at StopPATH WV about energy issues, transmission policy, misguided regulation, our greedy energy companies and their corporate spin.
In 2008, AEP & Allegheny Energy's PATH joint venture used their transmission line routing etch-a-sketch to draw a 765kV line across the street from her house. Oooops! And the rest is history.

    About
    StopPATH Blog

StopPATH Blog began as a forum for information and opinion about the PATH transmission project.  The PATH project was abandoned in 2012, however, this blog was not.

StopPATH Blog continues to bring you energy policy news and opinion from a consumer's point of view.  If it's sometimes snarky and oftentimes irreverent, just remember that the truth isn't pretty.  People come here because they want the truth, instead of the usual dreadful lies this industry continues to tell itself.  If you keep reading, I'll keep writing.
